VO2 Max Testing Results in Grimsby and Hamilton ON at Dia Physio

If you've just had a VO2 max test done, or you're thinking about booking one, you've probably already seen the number itself: a figure measured in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). But a number on its own doesn't tell you much. What matters is what it means for you, and what you do with it next.

At Dia Physio Care, VO2 max testing is one of the services we get the most questions about after the fact. Patients want to know: is this good? Is this bad? What am I supposed to do differently now? Here's how to actually read your results.

What VO2 Max Actually Measures

VO2 max is your body's maximum rate of oxygen use during intense exercise. It's widely considered the gold-standard measure of cardiovascular fitness, because it captures how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles work together under load, not just how fast you can run on a given day.

It's also turned out to be one of the strongest predictors of long-term health. A large 2018 study in JAMA Network Open, following more than 120,000 patients, found that people with the lowest cardiorespiratory fitness had a meaningfully higher risk of death over the study period than those in the highest fitness groups, a gap on the scale of other major risk factors like smoking. Moving up even one fitness tier was associated with a measurable drop in that risk.

Is Your Number Good?

This is the part most people get stuck on, because "good" depends entirely on your age and sex. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) publishes normative tables that classify VO2 max scores from Poor to Superior for each decade of life, and the honest answer is that a score which looks unimpressive next to a 25-year-old's might be excellent for someone in their 50s.

A few general patterns worth knowing:

  • VO2 max tends to decline by roughly 10% per decade after age 30 if fitness isn't actively maintained.
  • Consistent aerobic training, including structured interval work, can meaningfully slow that decline.
  • Women's values typically run 10-15% lower than men's at the same training level, due to differences in body composition and heart size, not fitness "worth."

Rather than comparing yourself to a single number online, the more useful comparison is to your own age and sex bracket, and to your own results over time.

What Testing at Dia Physio Care Adds

A fitness tracker can estimate VO2 max from your heart rate and pace, and that's useful for spotting trends. But it's an estimate, not a measurement. At Dia Physio Care, testing is done in person, scaled to your current fitness level through a short questionnaire, and takes about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the protocol used.

We've now performed more than 250 VO2 max tests, for reasons ranging from general longevity and weight loss goals to competitive sports performance. That volume matters, because it means your results are being read against a real, local reference point, not just a generic online chart.

From Number to Action

Your VO2 max result on its own is a snapshot. The more valuable part is what it's used for afterward:

  • Heart-rate training zones. Your result helps define the specific zones you should be training in for aerobic base-building versus higher-intensity intervals, rather than guessing from age-based formulas.
  • Interval calibration. If your goal is raising your VO2 max itself, the pace and duration of your intervals should be set from your actual test data, not a generic template.
  • Overtraining detection. Retesting periodically can flag when your fitness has plateaued or slipped, often before you'd notice it in your day-to-day training.
  • Nutrition planning. Many patients pair VO2 max testing with resting metabolic rate testing to build a nutrition plan around their actual energy needs, rather than an estimate.

Real Results, Real Timelines

We're careful not to promise a specific outcome, since everyone's starting point and training capacity is different. But a couple of anonymized examples from patients at our clinic give a sense of what's realistic with consistent, guided training: one patient raised their VO2 max from 36 to 48 over 11 weeks; another went from 56 to 72 over about six months, reaching an elite-level range without injury. Both used their retest results to adjust training as they went, rather than following a fixed plan from day one.

Getting Tested

If you're in Hamilton or Ancaster, you can book a VO2 max test at our main clinic. And if you're closer to our new Grimsby location, VO2 max testing is now available there too.

Whether you're chasing a race goal, working on longevity, or just curious where you stand, the real value of VO2 max testing is having a number you can actually act on. Book your assessment and we'll walk you through exactly what your results mean.
